Mauritius Ecotourism
A focus on Ile aux Aigrettes
Ile Aux Aigrettes, is a 26 hectares island in the Indian Ocean, situated in the Mahebourg Bay, 800 m off the south-eastern coast of the mainland island of Mauritius. It was declared a Nature Reserve in 1965.
In 1987 the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation obtained the lease with the aim of restoring this unique habitat to a condition as near as possible to what it was 400 years ago when man first arrived in Mauritius. After much effort, this dream is starting to become reality. The island has become a showcase for the work undertaken by MWF, a sanctuary of animal and plant species unique to Mauritius and found nowhere else in the world.
Today Ile Aux Aigrettes is the home of a dry ebony-rich forest that once was common around much of coastal Mauritius, the last refuge of the critically endangered coastal endemic species of ebony (Diospyros egrettarum),
Bois de Boeuf (Gastonia mauritiana), the endangered Bois de Chandelle (Dracaena concinna),
the rare Bois de Fer (Sideroxylon boutonianum), and a species of orchid Oeniella aphrodite.
Endemic animals include the Mauritius Pink Pigeon, the Mauritius fody, the Ornate Day Gecko,
the Telfairs skink. Aldabra giant tortoises, introduced to the island to take the place of
the extinct Mauritian species are now roaming free all over the island, the only place in
the Mascarenes where tortoises, are free in the wild.
Coupled to this is the setting, the spectacular Mahebourg Bay, rich in the early human history of Mauritius, which became the meeting points of the Great Spice Route, the slave route and the indentured labour route.
Ile aux Aigrettes, an obvious place to develop ecotourism
Thus, in 1997/8 infrastructure was created, a circular trail combining the interesting historical elements of the region, the unique flora and fauna of Ile aux Aigrettes, and the conservation work undertaken by the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation developed, and the island opened to paying visitors.
All buildings and infrastructure have been built on existing World War II structures and foundations, exiting paths have been reopened with minimal damage to the native flora, information boards placed along the circuit, and all tours accompanied by a Mauritian Wildlife Foundation trained guide.
