Mauritius Culture

Culture

Synonym of convergence of cultures, the island consists of people of Asian, African and European origin. Their ancestors, whether colonisers, or slaves and workers, have introduced their languages, values, traditions and religions, all coexisting in peace and harmony, following the motto “Unity in diversity”.

Sega

The friendly Mauritian people have, for long, offered a cordial welcome to visitors. The attitude and customs of the former enable their counterparts from different parts of the world to feel at home.

Various religious and cultural festivals occur throughout the year. These are usually spectacular and colourful and visitors are always welcome to join in as these are moments of sharing and brotherhood.

Spring Festival, Divali, Eid-ul-Fitr, Maha Shivaratree, Cavadee, Christmas or Easter are some main religious celebrations. The National Day is the 12th of March and New Year festivities are memorable as the night sky gets lighted and coloured by thousands of firecrackers.

Languages

There are three languages commonly used in Mauritius, English, Mauritian Creole (the mother tongue derived from colonial French) and French.
