People Page - Birth and Death
Any child born in Mauritius must be registered within 45 days following birth, with the Civil Status Office in the district where the birth has taken place or the Civil Status Office in the district where parents of the newborn baby reside.
If a birth is not recorded within the prescribed delay of 45 days, the Registrar of the Civil Status can authorize the registration on production of a certificate attesting the date and the birthplace.
If after three months, a birth is still not registered, the parents must seek an order from the district magistrate where the birth has taken place. In such cases, the Registrar of the Civil Status is not authorized to register the child.
The presence of two witnesses is no longer necessary.
Who can register?
• The father or mother if the latter are married (civil marriage)
• If it is not a civil marriage, and if they both want to register the baby, both must be present at the time of registration and sign the register of birth. If only one parent is present, the child will bear his/her surname.
Documents required:
(i) Marriage certificate and birth certificates of the parents in case of civil marriage
(ii) Birth certificates of the parents (where it is not a civil marriage)
(iii) Attestation provided by the institution where the birth took place
(iv) Identity cards of the parents
Any death occurring in Mauritius must be registered within 24 hours at the Civil Status office in the district where the death occurred or where the deceased resided before his death. One person is enough for the registration.
Documents required:
• Birth/marriage certificate or national identity card of the deceased
• Medical certificate testifying the cause of death
• National identity card of the declaring person
A burial/incineration permit will be delivered by the Office after recording of the death.
